Adi Turković, GS1 Bosnia and Herzegovina

At the begining of 2012, our analyses showed that in Bosnia and Herzegovina over 45% of the GS1 bar codes were illegal. GS1 Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo worked very hard on informing user companies who use illegal GTINs but with limited success.

In the GS1 Logger for Staff we saw the perfect tool for fighting against the use of illegal GCPs. In May 2012. GS1 Bosnia-Hercegovina joined GS1 Logger for Staff project and since then, it has been easier to fight illegal GCPs.

GS1 Bosnia and Hercegovina has been facing with many illegal GCPs. GS1 GO is familiar with the history of this problem. The Logger for Staff provides with the ultimat tool for fighting illegal GCPs. We started our GS1 Logger for Staff activities in May 2012. We made a total of 1507 scanned GTINs with 908 legal and 586 illegal. Only 13 of total were faulted (these 13 were scanned at the beginning with the previous version, but the new version never has failed hits).

Now we have over 35% illegal/unauthorized GTINs but it is much better than at the beginning. With the GS1 Logger for Staff we have an easy-to-use and powerful tool for the purpose of fighting illegal GCPs. Our procedure when we find an invalid number is: we take a picture of the product and follow up the illegal user by sending them letters with explanation why the GTINs are illegal and the picture of the product with the illegal bar code on it.

By September 2012, we contacted 120 illegal user companies. The result of our work can be seen in the table below:

  • Number of contacted illegal user companies: 120
  • Number of companies who legalized GCP: 25
  • Number of companies where we expect enrollment: 28
  • Number of companies who haven’t reacted yet: 80

The first step in fighting against illegal GTINs has been made, and these are the first results of our work. But we do not plan to stop here. We, at GS1 Bosnia and Herzegovina, are very satisfied with our achieved with the use of GS1 Logger for Staff and we will continue our activities on this project.

Our goal is to decrease the number of illegal GTINs by 20% by the end of 2012, and to continue in 2013.

’Logger for Staff Application is very useful for us. It helps us to bring our members back and to collect the annual fees.
